Film Night: The Baptism of Jesus Christ

Network of Islamic Artists
Meeting at St. Ethelburga’s (London, UK) on Wednesday, October 8, 7pm.

Film Night: The Baptism of Jesus Christ
For this gathering we are concentrating on the medium of film and will
be showing the documentary film The Baptism of Jesus Christ:
Uncovering Bethany beyond the Jordan. As part of the evening there
will be an opportunity to hear from the film’s director Mustafa
Gouverneur Henry and Most Reverend Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia
[tbc].

Space is limited; to reserve a place please email us at
nia0001@googlemail.com

It is a truly fascinating documentary film uncovering the pieces of
the ancient mystery of where Christ was baptized. Lost in time for
almost 1000 years, it is the remarkable story of the site’s
rediscovery and the ongoing excavations taking place there. Only 5% of
the area has been dug until today. Who knows what else lies beneath
this place and what it could reveal about Jesus Christ and the birth
of Christianity.

It concerns the area known as `Wadi al-Kharrar’ on the east bank of
the river Jordan, the “Bethany Beyond the Jordan” of the Gospels. A
complex of unique churches, baptismal pools and monasteries are
amongst the important discoveries uncovered so far. The area, since
the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, was a military zone and heavily mined
making it impossible of access. However in 1994 after Jordan and
Israel signed a peace treaty, archaeologists begun their excavations…

“A remarkable account of recovering a foundational part of our
Christian heritage.”
- The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams. Head of the
worldwide Anglican Communion

“An important, groundbreaking film…This film takes its subject
seriously. Christians must see this film. Everyone should see this film! “
- Dr. William F. Vendley, Secretary General. World Conference of
Religions for Peace, New York

“The Baptism of Jesus Christ: Uncovering Bethany Beyond the Jordan” is
a beautiful film that will speak to pilgrims of all faiths…This film
is a blessing.”
- The Rev. Canon Charles P. Gibbs, Executive Director, United
Religions Initiative

Rose,

Thank you for your interest in the Esse Quam Videri (To Be Rather Than

to Seem) Project. UNC Chapel Hill’s Center for Global Initiatives is

sponsoring this project in an effort to provide Muslims in North

Carolina a unique venue for sharing a clearer, more realistic sense of

self to the wider community.

I am traveling the state this summer working with Muslims interested

in creating an image and essay that reflects their identity.

These will be complied into a website, exhibition, and book.

I can schedule a time to come to Charlotte again if members of your

group would like to meet with me. I have photographic equipment  and

computer design programs like photoshop at my disposal to help with

individual projects.  I am an experienced community based artist.

Initially I was going to wrap everything up by August but CGI has decided to

keep the project open for submissions through the fall with a website. My

availability to work with people directly (come to their community,

photograph them, etc) will be limited after August 8th as I will going back

to teaching full time for the fall and spring semesters.

As I mentioned to you, it is probably best to settle on what the

participant wants to say then brainstorm ways to make it visual, then

support it with a short essay (2 -3 paragraphs). I can start this

process with anyone by email.

Please feel free to share this project with your members. There is no

cost involved. Here is a link to the  project on the Center for Global

Initiative Website ( http://gi.unc. edu/research/ Esse-Quam- Videri/Index )

My process blog is listed below.

Thank you.

Lesson Plans from the Jerusalem Fund

The Jerusalem Fund is investing in the development of timely curricula on topics relating to Arab arts and culture that can be disseminated widely to teachers in schools across the U.S. This will help to meet the immense need for well-developed, well-researched curricula that can better shape students’ understanding of the Arab and Muslim world in a way that dispels negative stereotypes and one-sided discourse on the issues.

Featured Resource! “Mightier than the Sword: Calligraphy of the Sixteenth Century Imperial Courts”

Explore this exciting web-based curriculum unit designed to provide a creative and interactive approach to studying many of the major empires that dominated the world stage in the 15th and 16th centuries.  Using Islamic calligraphy and culture as an entry point, students learn about seven empires: the Songhay, Saadian, Mughal, Safavid, Ottoman, Ming, Tokugawa Shogunate, and the Hapsburg, from historical, literary and artistic vantage points.  The unit is designed for students of World History, Literature, Arts and Mathematics.  It addresses national standards for 9th and 10th grade subject areas.
